Why it is dangerous for your pet to eat bones!!

Mickey is an adorable 22 month old neutered male Bichon Frise that presented to us after getting into garbage loaded with chicken bones.  We took an X-ray of Mickey's abdomen and found a number of sharp pieces of boney material in Mickey's stomach (see x-ray below...they are are the white objects located in the middle of the picture on the left side).  Mickey underwent surgery the next day and recovered very well afterward.

There are 2 big lessons to gain from this case.  First, ensure that your dog never has access to any bones, especially chicken or pork bones.  If you are unsure of whether a bone that you want to feed is safe please do not hesitate to call us and ask.  We would be more than happy to suggest a safe treat for your pet.  Second, this case illustrates how unpredicatible dogs can be.  This is one of those expensive lessons that thankfully these owners didn't have to learn because Mickey is on "Mastercare" pet insurance by Pet Care Insurance brokers.  By the way, Mickey's final bill was just over $1300.00 and the insurance covered it all except for the $50.00 deductable.
